SBO Winter Climbing and Navigation Course

In the Swedish Lapland, or the land of the midnight Sun, also known as Europe’s last wilderness, is the home for one of the training courses for becoming a a IFMGA/SBO mountain guide (Swedish Mountain Guides Association). A great place to learn the basic winter climbing skills needed as a mountain guides, where the participants are expected to be able to climb winter routes in a safe and efficient manner. This time of of the year the Sun is low on the horizon and it is also an excellent place for navigation training. To quote the Greek philosopher Aristotle, is by “for the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them”, i.e. there is an active participation in a direct and practical way of pacing and timing, using maps and route planning. We had some great conditions and all the candidates did well. Now there are only a few courses left before their first exams in early summer.

A great big thanks goes also to Mina & Dick and their staff at Abisko Mountain Lodge for their excellent food and hospitality. See you soon!

As always, you are welcome to join us for climbing or ski touring trips in the future to the Swedish Lapland where we have a lot of interesting proposals. Please feel free to contact us for further information.
